How to stay safer online without deleting every app

The internet is where we chat, learn, shop, game and relax. You do not have to stop using it to be safer. A few smart habits can protect your accounts, your information and your peace of mind.

Lock down your accounts:

  • Use a different password for your email than you use anywhere else. Your email is especially important because it can often be used to reset passwords for your other accounts.
  • The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends using three random words to create a password that is strong but easier to remember. It also recommends switching on two-step verification, or 2FA, for extra account protection.
  • Never share your password or a login code, even if a message appears to come from a friend. Their account may have been hacked.

Pause before you post or click

  • Before sharing something, ask: Would I be comfortable if a future employer or friend/relative saw this? Screenshots can last longer than disappearing messages.
  • Be careful with unexpected links, giveaways and urgent requests for money. Scammers try to make you act quickly. Stop, check the username or web address and contact the person another way if you are unsure.

Protect your boundaries:

  • Review who can see your posts, location and personal details. You are allowed to block, mute and report people. You do not owe anyone access to you, a reply or a private photo. When something is posted or shared, it is very hard (if at all) to remove it from the online world. Be careful with what you share.
  • If someone threatens, pressures or bullies you online, save evidence before blocking them. Tell a trusted adult, tutor, friend or social worker. If you feel immediately unsafe, call 999. You can also contact Childline free on 0800 1111 or speak to a counsellor online.

Staying safe online is not about being suspicious of everyone. It is about slowing down, protecting your information and trusting yourself when something feels wrong.
